IPad is Missing Bookmarks - Get them back!

My bookmarks disappeared and I wasn't able to add any new ones after upgrading the iOS. Get your bookmarks back by turning your iPad off and then back on again. Strange... But works!

Multiple Email Addresses from your Gmail Address

You can create multiple email addresses from one gmail email address, easily!

If your gmail address is mygmail@gmail.com, you can create an infinite number of email addresses simply by adding a plus sign "+" and a word (or any alphnumerics) just before the "@".

Like this:

mygmail+apple@gmail.com
mygmail+stores@gmail.com
mygmail+recipees@gmail.com

Happy filtering!

Facebook Crashes on iPad

Do this: uninstall/re-install the Facebook App. If that doesn't work then also reset the iPad.

After doing that Facebook is no longer closing on me. Don't do the reset unless the uninstall/re-install doesn't work as it's a bit of work to get all your settings back like you want them after performing an iPad reset

My version at time of this post writing: iPad 3

Sort ToDo List in Microsoft Outlook

For some reason it took me awhile to figure out how to properly alpha-sort the list under the To-Do Bar in Microsoft Outlook. This is what you  have to do:

Right click on "Arranged By:" at top of list.
Select: Custom > Sort > Subject (ascending) be sure to select NO when asked: "The field "Subject" that you want to sort by is not shown in the view. Do you want to show it?"

Dropbox - Quick Start Guide & Tips

Welcome to Dropbox!

Unlike other programs, Dropbox doesn't have a complicated interface to learn. It's built right into your desktop!  Here's how to get started:

Step 1:  Drag and drop any file or folder into your Dropbox folder.

Step 2:  Once your file/folder is inside your Dropbox folder, the program immediately starts syncing it to our secure servers.  Once this has finished, the file's icon is marked with a green check.  Your file is now safely backed up online and also accessible from the Dropbox website. (http://www.getdropbox.com)

Step 3:  Install Dropbox (http://www.getdropbox.com/install) on other computers you use, and they'll also receive a copy of the files you've put in your Dropbox.

That's it!    Now that Dropbox is watching your file, any changes you make will sync up instantly and automatically.  This gives you the freedom to work on any computer you choose. For more help adding files to Dropbox, see here: https://www.getdropbox.com/help/90

Happy Dropboxing!
- The Dropbox Team

Digital-QA Note: You can also access your files online from anywhere!

Save a PDF File

Once you find a .pdf file to save, you may notice there is no "right-click" or save option available in the Toolbar. If you have Adobe reader installed (which you likely do if you are looking at a .pdf), you'll find that if you hover your cursor over the lower center part of the screen, you'll see several options, and one of them is Save!

It looks like this (but you'll only see it if you hover):

You can also click that icon on the far right and it will bring up the standard Adobe toolbar framing the .pdf file with even more options.

(CTRL + SHIFT + S works too)

Sweet! I always seem to forget this...

Coffee Break: Vote YES on Prop 37

Using biotechnology is great for making medicine, not for making everyday food. Antimicrobial resistance is already a problem and superbugs now exist from wide-spread misuse of antibiotics (especially in cows). Prop 37 allows food to be labeled 'natural' when in fact it is modified to be pest resistant. To me that's not natural. America is one of the only industrialized nations without GMO labeling. The same corporations that said DDT and Agent Orange were safe have now put millions of dollars in defeating Prop 37. VOTE YES on PROP 37.

Not happy that Apple hid this one more layer deep since I access it so frequently (e.g. I only turn on Facebook when I want to post a check-in, but then I turn it off otherwise it drains the be-jezzus out of your battery).

Anyway, here it is now: Settings > Privacy Location Services

5 Tips for a Great Presentation

Great article on presenting (whether it's to Senior Executives or others). My team has gotten stuck before on presenting the Summary up front, only to find us giving our entire presentation without leaving the first slide. That felt frustrating at the time, but this article explains why that might not be so bad. Just a twist in perception, and planning!

Hyperlinks don't work in Email

If you get this message when trying to open a hyperlink within an email: This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.

This is what worked for me:

Open Microsoft Internet Explorer. Go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab, and make IE the default (we will be changing your default back to Chrome or other browser but this has to be done first). Close IE.

Open Chrome. You should see a banner at the top that says Chrome is not your default and do you want to make it the default. Select Yes.

Now go back to your email and click a hyperlink. Your link will open in Chrome now.

iOS 6 Updates and Features – What You Should Know

Safe-keeping this article for when I do upgrade. Leary of Apple Maps however so holding off.

"The Apple Maps app has been widely criticized for inaccuracies and for, well, downright goofy 3D images of bridges falling into the water, landmarks falling over and bumpy airport landing strips."

but this sounds nice:

"Updating to iOS 6 will make you feel as if you got a new device, even if you don’t have a shiny new iPhone 5 in your hands!"

How to Remove Conduit Toolbar

Go to Chrome's wrench in the upper right corner (although I notice today it is no longer a wrench, so anyway it is the Customization icon for Chrome). Go to Extensions. Delete: FLV Runner. Close Chrome and reopen it. It should be gone.

I also uninstalled the app (via Control Panel, uninstall a program) that caused it to load in the first place:  JPEG Lossless Rotator (don't install JPEG Lossless Rotator!)

Things I did that didn't work: System Restore, Uninstall and reinstall Chrome.

Do NOT install JPEG Lossless Rotator

This software gets 4.5 stars (of 5) from CNET but it hijacked my browser even after I unchecked every box during install so that it wouldn't. Be very careful. I do not recommend that you install JPEG Lossless Rotator.

If you did, you probably have a new persistent toolbar on Chrome from Conduit. Here is how to get rid of it: http://digital-qa.blogspot.com/2012/09/remove-conduit-toolbar.html

To export your LinkedIn Contacts and email addresses, go to the home page, click on Contacts, then use your BROWSER search to find "Export Connections" on that page. Today it is near the bottom on the right, but it moves around so that's why I use the browser page search to find it.

How to make a Phone Call from your Computer

If your cell phone is out of charge, and you already gave up your land line, here are two great ways to make a phone call from your computer:

1. Google Voice - Free. Of course you need a free Google account. The best. You also get free voice mail and forwarding services, free SMS text messaging, and free conference calling. Google Voice is only for calls in and to the US and Canada. There's a 3-hour talk time, but no limit to how many times you can call a number.

2. Skype - Not free, but not too expensive. Skype-to-Skype is free but calling a phone (or sending a text) will cost 2.3¢/min or $2.99/month (unlimited). Sending a text will cost 11.2¢/message.

Where are Blogger Pictures Stored?

Blogger photos are stored online in a Picasa album. When you imported your first picture into your blog, this album was created automatically. You can see them all here: https://picasaweb.google.com/home and then click on the Album that has the name of your blog.

As you upload more photos and videos in Picasa Web Albums, please keep in mind the following account limits:
  • Maximum photo size: Each image can be no larger than 20 megabytes and are restricted to 50 megapixels or less.
  • Maximum video size: Each video uploaded can be no larger than 1GB in size.
  • Maximum number of web albums: 10,000
  • Maximum number of photos and videos per web album: 1,000
  • Total storage space: Picasa Web provides 1 GB for photos and videos. Files under certain sizesdon't count towards this limit.*

Free storage limits (you must be signed up for Google+)

Photos up to 2048 x 2048 pixels and videos up to 15 minutes won't count towards your free storage.

Automatic resizing

All photos uploaded in Google+ will be automatically resized to 2048 pixels (on their longest edge) and won't count towards your free storage quota.

All photos uploaded from the Picasa software or in Picasa Web Albums over the free size limit will count towards your 1 GB of free storage. When you reach your storage limit, any new photos you upload larger than the free size limit will be automatically resized to 2048 pixels (on their longest edge).

If you reach your storage limit when uploading from the Picasa desktop software, you'll only be able upload at free storage sizes. Larger uploads will not be automatically resized to the free storage limit.

Have a blog? Rock some Pictures!

If you are blogging about food, shelter, design... I won't subscribe to your blog in my RSS reader if you don't allow photos in your feed.

There's simply too much information out there to consume, and photos are one way to help me narrow the funnel. And trust me, you want that.

Which of these would stop you in your tracks while pouring through your feed?

These Teeny Tiny BLTs from spoonforkbacon.com's RSS feed (Yummm!),

or this?

Nothing against Martha Steward's blog (http://www.themarthablog.com/). It just won't be in my feeds and  likely I won't get over to it very much. But you can believe for sure I clicked through to check out those baby BLT's!

Closing out Apps on your iPhone Does NOT Extend Battery Life

Like "playing whack-a-mole", tapping the little X's on the iPhone apps you see when you press the home button twice does not shut down a running app. Not sure where this misinformation got started!

Source: HuffingtonPost The 9 Biggest Tech Myths You Hear All The Time (But Are Absolutely Untrue)

"For a long time, the common wisdom held that in order to save battery life on the iPhone, we could just double-tap the home button and close out all the apps on the bottom tray that we weren't using. BLOOP BLOOP BLOOP: 'X' out of the apps, and battery would be saved.

Except, here's the thing: Those apps you see when you press the home button twice aren't actually running or using up any battery. As Fraser Speirs pointed out earlier this year, that row of icons is a list of recently used apps, NOT currently-running apps; when you hit the home button and exit an app, the iPhone automatically shuts it down after five seconds or so. Except in special cases (listed on Speirs' site), the app is not running nor eating up battery life.

Closing out apps might be dang satisfying -- it's like playing whack-a-mole! -- but it is almost certainly not preserving battery life."

But here is a BIG tip for making your iPhone battery life longer:

Change Outlook Default Font

Somehow my default font changed to Calibri(body) 9... tiny!

Anyway, in Outlook (2010), click through:
  • Tools
  • Options
  • Mail Format
  • Stationery and Fonts
  • Font (under New mail messages)
I like to choose Arial, Regular, 11  as this is most universal and you pretty much know what it'll look like when your recipient reads it.

iPad Keyboard Split!

If your iPad keyboard separated, simply 'pinch' it back together.

It's kinda nifty it can do that, because you can "undock" and /or "split" the keypad and move it around the screen... helpful if you want to see what would normally be underneath the keyboard. To access the feature, simply press and hold on the keypad icon at the bottom right corner of the keyboard.

Add Leading Zero's to Zip Codes in Excel

Two methods to pad zip codes with 0's when they are less than 5 digits:

This changes the value of the cell:
1. =TEXT(A1,"00000")

This doesn't change the value of the cell but simply displays the number with the leading zeros:
2. Within the cell (or highlight the column) select Format > Format Cells, Number, Custom, 0000#

Easiest & Free way to Rip a DVD to iPad, iPhone

Fantastic and easy instructions per MacWorld.com:

How to rip a DVD with HandBrake

"Looking to liberate the movies in your DVD collection from the confines of their plastic-and-metal prison so you can enjoy them on your iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Apple TV? Well look no further—all you need is some free software and to follow a few steps."

Basically this is what you'll do:
  1. Install HandBrake (free software) and VLC Media Player (also free software).
  2. Put your DVD in the DVD drive and in HandBrake select it ("Source").
  3. Select your device on the right:
    • iPad
    • iPod
    • iPhone
    • iPod Touch
    • AppleTV
    • Android
  4. I like to "Preview" (you can do that via the Preview button on the same toolbar where you selected "Source").
  5. If looks good, select "Start" and let it rip!
Now you can watch it on your computer. You'll need to then sync your iPad with your computer in order to view the movie on the iPad. Note to watch any movie on your iPad, select the Video app (NOT the iTunes app!)

Chrome Print Selection not Working

If you are instead getting these words: "copy" "search Google for..." "inspect element" you will need to do this until Chrome gets that working again:

CTRL+SHIFT+P - The print screen dialog box will pop-up and you can select "Selection"

(or this works too: Click the Chrome wrench in the upper right corner, select Print, then at the bottom select "Print using system dialog..." and you can select "Selection" there too.)

Nespresso DeLonghi Espresso Machine - How to Clean

First, I LOVE this machine!!! Low maintenance, and a fresh cup every time. No need to buy a bag of beans that will never be fresh after opening for that first cup. And, it looks cool too.

Cleaning instruction after frothing (click the image to enlarge it, or simply read the text underneath the snapshot):

  1. Place a container under the milk spout.
  2. Press and hold the CLEAN button (its's on top of the frother) until machine stops pumping automatically. Milk recipe buttons blink: rinsing process approximately 10 seconds. Steady light: rinsing process finished.
  3. Disconnect the frothing unit from the machine and place in the refridgerator. Close the steam connector door on the machine. (Note: This milk should not be kept for more than 2 days).
  4. All the milk container components are dishwasherproof. Wash them 2X a week.
